Fresh juice is an integral part of any cleanse; why? Because, unlike smoothies, juices require very little digestion, so they work in two ways 1) the nutrients bypass the digestion process and are assimilated into the body much easier and 2) by bypassing the process of digestion, they allow our systems to relax and detoxify!

I have been posting my juice cleanse recipes on my Instagram feed daily and sharing on Twitter as well; and many people have asked me to share the exact ratios. However, before I share all my yummy juice cleanse recipes I think it’s important to go over some housekeeping notes on the art of juicing.

Firstly, it’s important to use organic produce whenever possible, because quite frankly, you don’t want all those pesticide nasties getting into your system. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that buying everything organic can wreak havoc on a weekly food budget, so my advice is to ALWAYS refer to the Dirty Dozen List to make sure that whatever is on that list, and you plan on juicing, is purchased organic. Also, juices are best consumed the moment they are juiced, because this is when the nutrients are their most potent; so although it’s tempting to want to juice a weeks worth of fresh juice, I would advise against that. A good rule of thumb is this- if you juiced it that day, drink it THAT DAY.

You may be inclined to think that you need an expensive juicer to get on the juice bandwagon, but I’m here to tell you that this is NOT the case! When I first started juicing I had a small and inexpensive juicer, the Jack LaLanne Express Juicer; it served my needs and was a great starter juicer- I used it for over a year and barring some minor issues, it served me well. And then this past Boxing Week, I decided it was time to upgrade and I went large…enter the Breville Juice Fountain Plus! I. Am. In. LOVE with this juicer. It extracts so much juice, is a breeze to clean and runs quietly, considering it’s a juicer. And, although I went from beginner to pro juicer in one step, there is another middle of the road juicer that I really enjoy, the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor; it’s cheap and it’s effective! So you see, there is a juicer for every budget!

And lastly, juicing is an adventure in figuring out what flavor combinations make your taste buds sing, my preference in juice is just that, my preference; so use the following juices as a base guideline to your own preferences. And if you are wondering what exactly can be juiced, remember this, if it has juice, it can be juiced- it’s just that simple!
