Whole grains are an important part of any well balanced diet; and oatmeal is the patriarch of fiber. I can remember oatmeal being fed to me as a child as a “stick to my ribs” style of breakfast; and no matter where you stand in your diet philosophy, I’m sure you have memories of this kitchen staple. Even those who are stringent when it comes to carbohydrates, soften a bit when it comes to oatmeal; and with good reason. Oats, simply put, are a great source of fiber and contain a pleasant mix of both essential varieties- 55% soluble and 45% insoluble.
Beta-glucan, the fiber found in abundance in oats is responsible for oatmeal’s high nutritional accolades. It is a type of polysaccharide that helps lower cholesterol and significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. In addition to being a heart healthy go getter, beta glucan enhances the body’s ability to respond to bacterial infection.
But what about all the carbs Bianca?
Well, oatmeal has the honor of professing a low glycemic load; meaning it has a modest effect on blood sugar- even going as far as to say that those with Type 2 Diabetes stand to BENEFIT from beta-glucan; as it helps to stabilize blood sugar.
Oatmeal in for the win!
Ever heard of an oatmeal bath? Well they are renowned for having healing properties for rashes of all types- consider yourself lucky if you’ve never had one. Many people believe the healing potential can be accredited to the powerful polyphenol avenanthramide which is unique to oats; and believed to have anti inflammation and heart healthy properties.
I’ve been eating oats since I can remember; they are quick, easy and make for a substantial meal. But it wasn’t until recently that I began using oats in nontraditional ways; as they can sometimes be one note. But when oats are blended in a smoothie it offers a richness that I honestly cannot be described; and it fills me up for HOURS. I will freely admit that I have a hearty appetite, easily eating most gents under the table; but this smoothie is meal-y enough to satiate me. I look to this oatmeal smoothie during that time of the month when I feel like I could literally eat the entire contents of my fridge and be hungry within the next thirty minutes- ah, the joys of womanhood!
So if you’re like me (ravenous almost 100% of the day), then this smoothie has your name written all over it!
Cinnamon Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie
1/3 cup cooked oats
2/3 cup frozen blueberries
2 tbsp Greek yogurt
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp raw honey
Cook oats according to package directions. Allow to completely cool. Combine all ingredients in cup of a blender (I use my blendtec blender); and blend until completely smooth.
