Of course, most of the things that make sex not enjoyable are the things surrounding the act of sex—relationship problems, cultural and social barriers, medications, stress, anxiety, etc. Still, women should know that sex has many benefits for both physical and mental health. Here are just a few:
- Improved sleep quality.
Most Americans suffer from problems with sleep. Whether you don’t sleep enough, you sleep too much, or you wake up sporadically during the night, poor sleep time can affect lots of other areas in your life, including concentration and mood. When we have sex, not only do we engage in a physical activity that can relieve us of the energy needed to sleep, but during orgasm, we release a hormone called oxytocin, which has been shown to act as a natural sleep aid.
- Lower levels of stress.
Stress, especially in our fast-paced, modern world, is a problem for many of us at one point in time or another. Most of us don’t take the time to engage in relaxation techniques like meditation or vigorous, daily exercise. Sex ,however, can serve as one of the best relaxation and stress-relieving techniques of them all. Endorphins are heavily released during sex, which instantly relieves stress and even physical pain often caused by stress like headaches.

Oddly enough, sex can keep away those colds and flus that destroy your ability to get on with your life. Any form of exercise in general can help to strengthen your immune system. But for those who have sex once or twice a week or more, you’ll likely have an increase of an antigen in your saliva called immunoglobulin A (IgA). IgA is, according to the study that discovered the connection between sex and a strengthened immune system, the first line of defense against colds and flus.
- Improved self-esteem.
Sex certainly has benefits that extend beyond the physical. When you have sex on a regular basis with your partner, not only do you feel closer to your partner, but you also develop a better sense of self-esteem about your body. The best way to reap the self-esteem benefit from sex is getting to know your body and how it responds to different touches and sensations.
Most of us probably don’t need to read a list of health benefits to want to have sex. But it’s definitely great knowing that sex has advantages that are part and parcel of the good life.
